What information
we collect
- Web site
Cookies - California.com's main web site uses the Apache usertrack
module to track individual users progress through the site. This
information is stored for a period of less than 30 days.
- Login Information
- California.com stores a record of logins and logouts of its
users, how many octets (8 bytes) were transferred to and from
each user during that session, how long the session was, and why
the session was terminated. (user request, lost carrier, etc)
- Snooper Information
- California.com has employed Snooper machines utilizing the Snort
software to detect DOS attacks and other malevolent activities.
Snort is a rule set based snooper that discards information that
doesn't appear to be of an abusive nature. More information is
available at http://www.snort.com/
on how this software works. This IS NOT in any way similar to
the FBI's Carnivore technology that can be used to monitor internet
use. This software's only concern is abusive and potential hacker
type behavior.
- Account Information
- California.com requests standard information about each of its
customers. Full Legal name, Telephone number, and mailing addresses
are REQUIRED to setup an account. This also consists of usernames,
email addresses, hosted domains, and other information necessary
for your account to function correctly.
How we use
this information
- Web site
Cookies - For statistical reasons, it's important to us to know
how many distinct visitors we have to our web site. The Apache
Usertrack module is used to send each visitor a unique, non-personal
cookie to differentiate between multiple hits and multiple users.
This information is stored in the standard Apache log files, which
we keep for no longer than 30 days.
- Login Information - Primarily tracked with new accounts, this
information is used to assess quality of line problems, and verify
user reported line trouble. Otherwise used as a general Quality
of Service indicator. This information is usually stored for 1
year.
- Snooper Information - As indicated above, this information is
used for DOS and hacker attempts only. Other information is automatically
discarded by the snooper program. Alerts are usually stored for
less than one month, and processed using the program SnortSnarf
by Silicon Defense.
- Account Information - This information is used to maintain the
various servers, minimize storage and other expenses from inactive
accounts, etc. We also use this information internally to send
notification of bills and payments, and to contact users when
necessary due to billing or other account problems.
Who we share
this information with
- Web site
Cookies - Individual domains hosted by California.com have access
to their log files, so we cannot say for sure what happens to
the web cookie information collected by hosted domains. California.com
and Econetwork.net perform statistical analysis on the log files,
which are then discarded. This
statistical information, which has no trace of individual
visitors, is used to attract advertisers.
- Login Information
- Users may request a log of their login trail in the event of
a dispute, but otherwise this information is only used internally,
and is not disclosed to third parties.
- Snooper Information
- The technical staff of California.com are the only individuals
with access to this information, which is never shared with
third parties for security reasons.
- Account Information
- The staff of California.com have access to this information
as a necessary part of the day to day business of the company,
however this information is not used beyond that purpose. If
you wanted to share your home address, telephone numbers and email
addresses with others, we surmise you would do it yourself, not
ask us to disclose them for you.
In short (A
concise summary)
- The only information
we share with outside companies is a statistical analysis of our
web logs, including the non-personal cookies which are used solely
for identifying distinct visitors.
- All other information,
including personally identifiable details are considered suitable
for internal use only, and are used to measure and maintain quality
of service, and notify customers of significant events and/or
problems.
