CaliforniaCom
is in the middle of moving to different offices, we apologize for any inconveniences that
you may run into, and realize that fixing the problem is crucial. The following is a list
of current problems that we are or have been experiencing lately. From now on, any time
you see the picture of the guy reading a newspaper, (to the left), It means something
important is going on, and you probably should check it out!
We have recently switch platforms from BSD to SUN. We understand the impotence of keeping all servers alive and healthy so that our users can successfully send and retrieve email and/or web pages. We apologize for the inconveniences we have been experiencing associated with this move, and expect to have everything back up and running shortly. Until then, this page will be up and constantly updated with known situations. Thank you for your patience. -Staff

* I have received alot of questions regarding
weather or not the smurf attack is the reason why our servers have been down.
The answer is no. The DoS attack is in no way related to our current
difficulties. Click here to read more about DoS attacks
an how they affect networks.

Our database that handles logins went down for about 45 minutes (from approx. 3:45PM
to 4:30PM). This would have caused anyone trying to log in to be denied access. It also
may have caused a reoccurring password dialog box. This particular server is back up now,
and logins are accepted. For future reference, I will be adding any known problems to the
greeting message you get when you call into the office. This way, if we are down, and it's
not your fault, we don't have 1000 people trying to call in to the office asking the same
question. Hopefully, if you are experiencing a problem, this will be an even better way of
relaying an explanation to you, so you don't have to wait on hold for 30 minutes just to
get a simple answer. Thanks once again!

Mail and web servers are still up and running. Seems we may have found out the problem.
Some of you have been calling in saying that the email still does not work for you. For a
small amount of people, the email accounts somehow got confused during our move... now
this does not apply to everyone, but may explain why some of you haven't been able to
send/receive email at all. If this sounds like you, here is how you fix it...
First, depending on what program you are using for email, make sure
that you are using the correct email server. The outgoing (SMTP) as well as the incoming
(POP) mail server should be global.california.com. If this doesn't work, try using numbers
instead... the numbers (for both servers) are 209.3.225.32. Also try CAPITALIZING your
password when it asks you for it. If you have tried all of the above, and it still doesn't
work, maybe your account needs to be re-added or re-constructed. To find out if this is
you, simply make a connection to the internet like you normally would, and telnet to
global.california.com and log in with your email name and password. If it gives you some
error message, or simply doesn't let you log in, then we may need to re-construct your
home directory, in which case you should call in! (Telnet requires some sort of telnet
client, which you can find for free at www.shareware.com.
Windows 95-98-NT users can telnet in by going to the Start menu > Run > and type in
the following: telnet global.california.com.)
If you have tried calling in, you may have had a hard time getting
through. Please keep in mind that there are many people with similar problems calling in
as well, and we only have so many phone lines. Thank you for your patience, and we will
get back to everyone that needs help.

Things are looking better! No problems over the weekend. We are now concentrating on
those of you who are calling in for support. The most common problems now are Windows 3.x
users not being able to change the DNS numbers. If this is you, click
here for more info on how to fix this problem.
Another common problem are the Windows 95-98 users that cannot create a
working dial up connection. I have gone through many many people's settings over the past
few days, and all of them fall under the same situation.
In Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Network, you need to make sure that
everything under TCP/IP > Dial Up Adapter (or it may just say TCP/IP), is either
disabled or removed. There are only 4 tabs that you need to check... they are DNS (click
on disable DNS), Gateway (remove any installed gateways), WINS Configuration (Click on
Disable WINS Resolution),
IP Address (Click on Obtain an IP address automatically). That's all for now. I will
continue to update this page as needed.
Friday 7/3/98 6:40 PM
Email servers are back up and running! Sorry for the delay. The mail server
has been upgraded from 64 MB to 256 MB of memory. People will be in the office over the
weekend if you still need help. Have a great holiday. Any new updates will be posted here
as they occur.
Friday 7/3/98 12:50 PM

Common problems you may experience:

We are doing all we can to have all problems fixed before your weekend arrives! Thank you
for your patience, please check back soon for further updates.

have been called in to troubleshoot and help fix the problem with both servers.
Wednesday 7/1/98 11:10 AM
Mail and web servers were down, but were rebooted and are now back up.
Solutions to known problems:
-Email Problems
1. Are you having an email problem? Users that are trying to receive email and are
getting back an incorrect password error message should try typing their password in ALL
UPPER CASE letters. Users that are trying to send/receive email and are getting error
messages having to do with "unknown server" or "request timed out"
should change your mail server settings from global.california.com to
the number 209.3.225.32.
2. Make sure that you are using the correct settings for
mail. POP3 and SMTP servers MUST be set to global.california.com and not any other number
you may have already had.
(Eudora users - set your POP account to user@global.california.com and your smtp
server to 209.3.225.32)
3. If you are trying to get to your email using pine, you will now need to telnet to global.california.com and log on using your email name and UPPER CASE PASSWORD. (If your email address is johndoe@california.com then you would login with johndoe and your password).
-FTP
1. Users that are trying to ftp to
your webspace, please use ftp.california.com with your login (email) name and password
(UPPER CASE).
-DNS
1. Make sure that your DNS settings are correct!!! Click
Here for the new settings.
-Denial Of Service
