Linux is an unsupported Operating System, but can be used quite easily
with California.com. It is not advised that you attempt to install or
configure linux to dial using these instructions if you're not familiar
with unix operating systems.
This page describes how to setup Redhat 8.0 to connect to the internet.
Click here to learn how to setup the mail program
"Evolution"
| Step 1: Open the Network Application |
 |
Under the Gnome menu, in System Tools, there's an application
called "Network." This application will prompt you for
the Root password to the system. If you do not have the root password,
ask the person who owns or setup the computer what it is, you'll
need it to use this application in the future!
You may or may not get this screen immediately. If you get a window
that looks like Step 4, click the "Add" Button. |
| Step 2: Enter the telephone number and
your user information |
 |
Find a local
access number and enter it where prompted. You DO NOT
need to enter the area code or country code unless you plan on calling
long distance. Enter your username and password in the spaces provided.
The Provider Name may be anything you wish, it's a friendly name so
you can identify the connection. We recommend "CaliforniaCom" |
| Step 3: Confirm your settings |
 |
If you've made any errors, click the back button, if not, click
Finish. |
| Step 4: Activate your network connection |
 |
In this example, there are two networks, one wireless
and one modem. Click the Modem connection, then click Activate.
You may hear your modem connecting, depending on the speaker volume
you set when setting up the modem. After aproximately 30 seconds,
you should see a screen like this one, indicating that the network
connection is active.
To confirm this, use a terminal window, and type "/usr/sbin/ifconfig
ppp0". You should have an address starting with 64.81. |
| Step 5: Setup other network applications |
 |
Mozilla (A web browser) should work immediately, but you'll need
to setup a mail program like Evolution in order to send and receive
Internet Email on your Linux machine. It just so happens that in RedHat
8.0, Evolution is the Mail program installed by default under "Internet"
in the Gnome menu |
