Fetch
is a Macintosh program for transferring files. It uses
the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and therefore allows
a networked Macintosh to transfer files with any connected
machine that supports FTP. Access to files is, of course,
limited to those files to which the user has access privileges.
For the novice Internet user there are plenty of public
access files to peruse.

MacWais
WAIS stands for Wide Area Information Servers. WAIS is
an Internet utility that lets you do keyword searches
of over 500 indices on the Internet. Indices exist on
a variety of topics. At this point there are more for
technical subjects such as computer science or particle
physics, but other subjects are being added all the time.
The Project Gutenberg collection is searchable, and there
a few indices of the Bible and other religious texts available.

Homer
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's a way for people
to talk with thousands of other people, all over the world,
in real time (or something close to real time anyway).
There are machines around the world known as IRC servers,
whose purpose it is to shuttle around all the things that
everyone is saying. IRC users interact with an IRC client.
Homer is an IRC client written for the Mac in an attempt
to use some of the Mac's graphical features to create
an easy-to-use and powerful interface to IRC.

Ircle
Ircle is another IRC client. It's prefered over Homer
by power users because it's interface is cleaner and it
supports more IRC commands. It's got a much higher learning
curve than Homer though so wait untill you're comfortable
with Homer before moving on to Ircle.

Anarchie
Pronounced Anarchy. Anarchie is an application
that lets you download and upload files via the File Transfer
Protocol over the Internet. Opening a directory on a remote
FTP server -- whether it's a Mac, UNIX machine, or a PC
-- brings up a window remarkably similar to the ones you'd
see in the Finder. You can drag files and folders between
Anarchie windows and the desktop for quick uploads and
downloads. Dragging files from an Anarchie window to the
Trash will delete them from the remote server, just as
if that server was your own hard drive.
