Step 3: Configure Dial Up Networking for use with CaliforniaCom
Inc.
1. Open up My Computer from your desktop and double-click on
the Dial-Up Networking icon. Now double-click on the Make New
Connection icon. This will walk you through the make new connection
wizard. It will ask you to name the connection you are about to
create. You can name it anything, but a good name for it should
be something like CaliforniaCom.
2.Your modem should now be shown in the select a modem area.
Press the configure button to begin to configure your modem. Under
the General tab, choose 57600 for the maximum speed, regardless
of what your modem actually connects at. DO NOT however, choose
to only connect at this speed. Now switch to the Connection tab.
Under call preferences, the only box you should have checked is
wait for dial tone before dialing. Now go to the Options tab.
The only box that should be checked off in here is at the bottom,
and it is called Display modem status. Press the OK button. Now
click the Next button. Enter the phone number corresponding to
the local access number in your area.
Local access numbers are
availible at http://www.california.com/support/basic/accessnumber.html
Now press the Finish button and your icon will be created.
2. Back in the Dial-Up Networking window, highlight your new dial
up icon by clicking on it once. Now go to the file menu and choose
properties. Press the Server Type button. You'll get the server
types dialog box. You will want to make sure that PPP Windows
95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet

Under Advanced Options:

-Make sure that "Enable Software Compression" is not
checked.
-Make sure that "Require Encrypted Password" is not
checked.
Under Allowed Network Protocols
-Make sure that "NetBEUI" is not checked.
-Make sure that "IPX/SPX" Compatible
is not checked.

checked.
Now click the TCP/IP settings button. At the top, you want it
checked off on Server Assigned IP Address. About half way down
the window, click the button labeled Specify Name Server Addresses.
You will want to enter the following numbers for the primary and
secondary DNS:

CaliforniaCom Inc..

Click on the Control Panel, and this will bring up a separate
window with many icons viewable. Find the icon called "Network",
and double click on it.
Scroll down to the bottom of the list, and double click on TCP/IP.
A dialog box will appear.
Make sure that the following settings are correct:
IP Address: Server assigned IP address
WINS Configuration: Disable WINS resolution
Gateway: There should be NO installed gateways. If
there is a gateway, remove it.
DNS Configuration: Disable DNS.
Press OK at the bottom, and then press OK again. It may ask you
to restart your computer. If this is the case, go ahead and restart
your machine before moving on.
3. Now, lets create a shortcut to your dialing icon so you do
not have to go into the Dial Up Networking icon every time you
want to dial.
Double click on the icon "My
Computer", and go into Dial Up Networking. Find the icon
that you created earlier. With your mouse, click once, and drag
the icon over to your desktop and drop it there. It will tell
you that it cannot move the icon here, but it would like to make
a shortcut. Choose Yes. Close any windows that you have open.
Double click on your Dial up icon on your desktop. Insert your
username and password in the appropriate areas. Press the connect
button and your modem should start dialing. Wait a couple rings
and your computer should begin communicating with the other modem.
When your modem connects, Windows may bring up a smaller window
with a box that counts off time spent online. When you see this
box, minimize it, and run your internet applications! A good place
to start would be and http://www.windows95.com
for 32 bit shareware.
