California geology has a rich cultural heritage, so here are the geological gems worth discovering in the Golden State.Disclaimer: California.com does not receive any kind of compensation for reviewing any of the products or services mentioned in this article.

The United States has always been a melting pot of cultures. The Native American tribes of California have unique traditions of their own, but they all share a common admiration and use of jewelry and adornments. At the time, served as both decoration and currency, gems in everyday life are traced 500 years back.

With a diverse array of rock and mineral formations, even long before California’s Gold Rush period, the state was home to – as mineral explorer Thomas Nagin puts it – Nature’s Art. Inbred and amalgamated from organic elements, gemstones are most famed for their ability to absorb from their environment. Whether it is tourmaline or quartz, rubies or diamonds, gems have stuck around from ancient times for their power to attract and reflect light, colors, and wealth. California geology has a rich cultural heritage when it comes to that; discover gems around the Golden State today.

1. Pala Chief Mine

The owner of Tiffany & Co, Dr. Frederic Kunz, identified the first kunzite found in San Diego’s Tourmaline Queen.

Location: 37304 Magee Rd, Pala, CA 92059.

San Diego’s supply of tourmaline, along with Riverside, exceeds those from Northern California geology by far. Ranked as one of the best places to live, the city of Pala is the birthplace of the Pala Chief mine. Being the major gem cutting center, the first kunzite (a variety of lilac spodumene) was found in San Diego’s Tourmaline Queen Mine and identified by Dr. Frederic Kunz himself.

If you’re hounding for tangible history in San Diego, the mine is open throughout fall and winter and is rich in garnets, kunzite, tourmaline, morganite, and more. Enjoy the pride and joy of San Diego while you (quite literally) dig through the planet's history, sift thoroughly, and get rewarded by the true treasures of Earth. Make sure to reserve your place beforehand by signing up and enjoy the geologic history of Southern California.

2. OceanView Gem Mine

Sift, sort, and take all your precious finds from this gem-hunt home with you.

Location: 37304 Magee Rd, Pala, CA 92059.

A unique experience awaits you and fellow rockhounds at the OceanView Gem Mine. Being in the zone of the state's rock-cutting center, it’s famous for its production of tourmalines, kunzites, and morganites. If you’re intrigued to venture into hounding down some California geology, this mine is only available three days a week. On a gem-hunting trip down this mining area, you’ll be granted tools to sort your findings and keep the bounties. Enjoy the sweet panorama of San Luis Rey Valley and the neighboring mines, as well as the many unexpected enticing wonders of California. Whether you’re with family or traveling alone, be sure to pack some snacks and water as you might linger a while in this California coast geology center. If you intend to keep some of your finds, a storage bag to carry back home the goodies is always a good idea.

3. Stewart Mine

Kunzite is used for its healing benefits, such as enhancing self-expression and calming the nerves.

Location: Magee Rd, San Diego, CA.

Another one of Southern California’s famous mines might lure you in with its unique granite and kunzite gemstones shimmering as the light passes through every day. A wild adventure is yet to be embarked on for the passionate hunters of California geology. Situated in the Pala Indian Reservation of a small northern San Diego village, a mesmerizing tourmaline mine rests.

Spanning two and a half acres and glimmering with a medley of precious gems, this mine is arguably one of the best geological places to visit in California. Even with cut-price entrance fees, do not underestimate the rewards of this gem-hunting trek. Rumor has it that an explorer once stumbled upon a $2,500 worth of tourmaline stone; make sure to check out for lepidolite, otherwise known as purple rocks.

Even without the reward, this rockhounding trail is one of the most unprecedented outdoor trips you’ll want to take next! Be sure to show up before 9:30 because the guided morning tour is not something you’ll want to miss.

4. Crescent City Beaches

The Crescent City’s Pebble Beach in California, is a treasure cove for agates and jaspers.

Pebble Beach Location: Pebble Beach, Del Monte Forest, CA.
South Beach Location: 245 Anchor Way, Crescent City, CA 95531.
Crescent Beach Location: Crescent Beach, California 95531.

Starting from the fascinating Mendocino artisan hunts in NorCal, California’s geology bears the fruits of mother nature. Gradually congregating in the state’s northern hemisphere,  plenty of glamorous rocks await to be discovered in this city. Named after the crescent-shaped stretch of the beach, Crescent City has a mining history hiding away in Del Norte County.

Though very far from the Laguna Beach geology finds, Crescent city is home to many rock-hounding locations, incorporated into Del Norte County. On your hunt to find gemstones, Crescent City beaches offer you the best beach time experience. Begin your pursuits of polished glory at Crescent City’s Pebble Beach. Enjoy a series of finds including agates and jaspers; if you’re confused between the two, keep in mind that jasper has darker opacity. Be sure to plan your excursion day well in advance, as the beach is a terrific area for fishing and hiking. Be thorough with South Beach and you just might come across some shimmering quartzes!

5. Happy Camp Jade

Jade stones have become a significant part of everyday facial routines not just in California, but around the world.

Location
: Happy Camp, Siskiyou County, CA 96044.

The geology of California is not limited to San Diego at all. Popular for its Gold rush history, Siskiyou County is full of gratuitous gemstones, anticipating the day they see sunlight. Surrounding the city are numerous creek beds with fruits of the earth growing at unimaginable depths right below your feet. You’ll find this California geology site located in Happy Camp, in the extreme north where Indian Creek feeds into the Klamath River. Happy Camp Jade is highly valued because you can only get a pound of good-grade material from a hundred pounds of raw rock. If you’re hunting for precious gems, all you have to do is indulge in some outdoor activities. The chances of stumbling upon a Happy Camp Jade are a snorkel away! You‘ll want to keep this place in your heart and maybe even on your fingers, as you travel around the jaded wonders of Siskiyou County.
