A luxurious, Japanese-influenced hideaway in the
world-renowned Sonoma Valley

Tucked away in the Sonoma Valley enclave of Glen Ellen, Gaige House + Ryokan is an upscale yet unpretentious haven promising nothing but utter relaxation and tranquility. The secluded property set along Calabazas Creek beckons with its oak-shaded lawn, calming fountains, bamboo-lined walkways, and charming gardens, immediately encouraging guests to slip into a state of utter bliss once they arrive at the award-winning Wine Country destination.

Housed in an 1890 Queen Anne–style abode, Gaige House + Ryokan incorporates Japanese touches into every aspect of the historic property. Asian objets d’art and opulent leather chairs cozy up to the fireplace in the lobby, meditation areas allow guests to find their inner calm, zen gardens evoke the ambience of Japan, and lavish guest rooms boast modern Asian flair.

But to fully immerse themselves in the unique Gaige House + Ryokan experience, guests should book one of the eight Zen Suites situated away from the main house. These posh retreats are modeled after ryokans (traditional Japanese inns). Even the bathrooms have at least one eye-catching element, from a whirlpool fit for two and a custom-made sink to large walk-in showers and deep granite tubs. Guests can slip into a soft yukata robe and zori slippers, enjoy a complimentary tea service complete with cast-iron pots and loose-leaf teas, and watch the flowing creek from the comfort of their private patio. Those who stay in these elevated suites can’t help but unwind—and some many never want to leave.

The Zen Suites are modeled after traditional Japanese ryokans.

Honing in on Japanese Hospitality

The Gaige House + Ryokan staff pampers guests as soon as they step foot on the property, striving to provide a true home-away-from-home experience. In the cozy lobby, armchairs sit beside a roaring fire, board games and novels line the shelves, Japanese sake and sherry are available for sampling, and an assortment of freshly baked cookies is always on hand. Every afternoon, guests are also treated to complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres, giving them the opportunity to meet local vintners and savor local cheeses, crackers, nuts, and fruit. Even four-legged friends are welcome to join their owners at the hotel (with advance notice); opt for the Pampered Pet package so Fido can enjoy complimentary treats, personal food and water bowls, a plush bed, and a sushi chew toy.

Indeed, guests will find a variety of unparalleled amenities at Gaige House + Ryokan, but the signature breakfast buffet may be the most beloved offering. Served in the sunlit back-of-the-house space, the impressive spread features mouthwatering pastries, house-made granola, local fruit, and one or two hot dishes—such as savory quiches, or fluffy pancakes—plus coffee, teas, and freshly squeezed juices.

The meditation room is a tranquil refuge.

Stepping Into a Serene Sanctuary

You can easily wile away the rest of the day by reserving a private yoga session, reading a book under the shade of the massive magnolia and oak trees, kicking back in the lounge chairs lining the swimming pool’s red-brick border, going for a dip in the idyllic hot tub, and simply exploring the gorgeous grounds. You can even pamper yourself with a luxurious treatment in the “spa loft”—or in the privacy of your own room. Whether you opt for the hot-stone massage or the couple’s Swedish massage, you will feel like a new person in no time.

Gaige House + Ryokan also gives guests the opportunity to book a one-of-a-kind experience. Known as shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), this guided walk through the woods enables guests to connect with nature and achieve a more restful state by practicing breathing and meditation exercises focused on releasing stress and anxiety.

While it may be difficult to draw yourself away from such sumptuous accommodations, the quaint village of Glen Ellen is merely a short walk away and is home to numerous shops, tasting rooms, and acclaimed restaurants. And if you need recommendations on what to do in the region, you’re in luck: Gaige House + Ryokan provides free concierge services, and because nearly all the staff members are in-the-know locals, you will be privy to insider secrets and hidden gems.

But after a day out on the town, there’s no better refuge than the Gaige House + Ryokan, where you can soak up the serene environs, find your zen moment, and rejuvenate your spirit.
