For years, she persevered as her forward-thinking dystopian novels, which delved into critical issues such as racial injustice, gender equality, and climate change, didn't find a commercial audience. To support herself, Butler took on various jobs, including telemarketing and dishwashing, while she continued to write. Her literary recognition began to climb significantly only near the end of her life.

In contemporary times, Butler's novels have not only gained widespread acclaim but have also become staples in the curricula of over 200 colleges and universities across the country. Furthermore, her groundbreaking novel "Dawn" is in the process of being adapted into a television series by acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay, testament to her enduring legacy and the growing appreciation for her visionary work.

She was a gold medalist in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Henderson even set the still-standing American record for 9–10-year-old girls in the 400-meter dash.

The famous Black Californian athlete was inducted into the San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame in 2009. Currently, she is the women’s track and field coach at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.
