Sure, it’s easier than ever to read on a screen. But somehow, that hasn’t made real books any less appealing. There’s still something about flipping through pages, browsing shelves, and finding a book by accident that just hits differently.

Independent bookstores prove that every day. Around Los Angeles, they’re not just places to buy books; they’re spaces to slow down and explore. These bookstores keep book culture alive in the city by supporting local writers and creating spaces where people can connect.

Skylight Books

With a large ficus tree in the center, surrounded by bookshelves, this atmospheric bookstore feels as if it has stepped straight out of a book. It’s a place where you’ll linger, whether or not you came in looking for a book.

Inside the store, on warm wood shelves, you’ll find everything from buzzy new novels to niche art books, along with a surprisingly good kids’ section tucked away like a little secret.

Opened in 1996, the bookshop quietly grew from a neighborhood bookstore into one of Los Feliz’s cultural staples. Throughout the years, it has built a reputation not just for books, but for becoming a gathering place for readers, writers, and events that keep its shelves feeling alive.

Address: 1818 N Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Opening hours: Daily 10 am - 10 pm

Book Soup

Book Soup has been part of the Sunset Strip since 1975, growing into one of Los Angeles’ most iconic independent bookstores over the decades. It has long been known as a cultural hangout for writers, musicians, and film people who pass through the area.

The space feels a bit dim, cozy, and pleasantly packed, with shelves stretching almost up to the ceiling and narrow aisles that naturally slow you down as you browse. Book Soup has that almost cinematic feel: like every corner has held years of conversations and quiet book discoveries.

The selection leans heavily into film, music, art, and contemporary fiction, with especially strong sections on entertainment and culture.

Address: 8818 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069
Opening hours: Daily 10 am - 10 pm

The Iliad Bookshop

Right on Cahuenga Boulevard, the Iliad Bookshop feels like one of those bookstores you’re lucky to still find in LA.

The name comes from Homer’s The Iliad, and there’s also that fun bit of local lore: it once sat next to the now-closed Odyssey Video, making the whole thing feel like a quiet literary joke.

Inside, it’s all about the mix: used books, rare finds, and out-of-print titles, especially in literature, film, and the arts. You don’t really go in with a plan; you just browse and see what you end up with.

There are also a couple of cats roaming around like they own the place. Plus, don’t miss the boxes outside, where free books sometimes show up.

Address: 5400 Cahuenga Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601

Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11 am – 7 pm

The Last Bookstore

Here’s LA’s most beloved and Instagrammed indie bookstore: The Last Bookstore. Step through its gigantic doors and you’re suddenly in a maze of book tunnels, sculptural shelves, and hidden corners that look more like art than a store. Housed in a former bank building with soaring ceilings and towering columns, the bookstore boasts hundreds of thousands of new and used books.

Their shelves are constantly shifting: they buy, sell, and trade books, and regularly host events, shoots, and exhibitions. Here you’ll find everything from well-worn classics and contemporary fiction to rare editions, out-of-print titles, quirky one-offs, artist books, and even vinyl records.

Address: 453 S Spring St (Ground Floor), Los Angeles, CA 90013

Opening hours: Daily 11 am – 8 pm

Mystery Pier Books

Mystery Pier Books is hidden just off Sunset Boulevard, inside an old house at the end of a narrow little passage. It’s the kind of place you might miss if you weren’t already looking for it.

Inside, it’s all about rare first editions, signed copies, out-of-print finds, and carefully selected literary treasures. The entire space truly feels like a small museum, except everything is for sale, and each shelf has something special waiting to be noticed.

The staff are super welcoming and know their books inside out, happy to chat or help you find something specific. Just around the corner from Book Soup, it’s an easy stop that somehow always feels a bit magical.

Address: 8826 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Opening hours: Monday – Saturday, 11 am – 6 pm, Sunday, 12 pm – 5 pm

Bonus Pick: Vroman's Bookstore

Vroman’s Bookstore has been around since 1894, so it’s not just a bookstore; it’s a Pasadena favorite.

The collection is strong, with everything from new releases to classics and more niche finds, and the staff is helpful without being overbearing, which makes browsing feel easy.

What really stands out, though, is how much more there is. The two-story space is filled with gifts, candles, music, and more, plus a cozy café, so it’s the kind of place you can really take your time in.

Address: 695 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101

Opening hours: Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 9 pm, Sunday, 10 am – 7 pm.
