With median home prices consistently rising, the list of the richest counties in the U.S. only keeps getting longer. And while you might think the wealthiest places are only by the coast, you’ll be surprised to find out that’s not exactly the case. If we had to describe them by a single characteristic, there’s one thing that the top richest counties in the U.S. have in common—they have a small population.

Not all counties are created equal; some are just affluent by nature. Marin County might be the smallest in the Bay Area, but what it lacks in size, it makes up with scenic views and a comfortable lifestyle. The county’s mild weather, proximity to San Francisco, and top-notch education make it one of the most sought-after in the U.S.

Vast open spaces and flourishing agriculture make San Mateo County superior to surrounding counties.
