California's food scene is famously diverse, and nowhere is that more obvious than at its festivals. These events go beyond good food. They celebrate the state's agricultural roots, its local communities and the chefs who keep finding new ways to reinvent a single crop. If you're craving garlic ice cream, deep fried asparagus or a strawberry dessert you didn't know existed, these seven festivals are worth building a trip around.

Avocados are all the rage recently and California is one of the best places to grow them.

The Avocado Extravaganza at the Fallbrook Avocado Festival

Avocado lovers unite each spring in Fallbrook, a small Southern California town that transforms its downtown into one long celebration of the state's favorite fruit. Vendors line the streets selling avocado toast, fresh guacamole and inventive avocado desserts, while guacamole competitions and cooking demonstrations keep the crowd entertained.

The festival also features arts and crafts booths, live music, beer gardens and activities for kids, making it an easy day trip for the whole family. This year's event, the 39th annual, took place April 19.

When: Annually in mid April

Embrace the delicious and versatile strawberry in Oxnard, California.

Indulge in Berry Bliss at the California Strawberry Festival

Ventura hosts one of the sweetest events on the California festival calendar each May. The California Strawberry Festival puts the state's signature berry front and center, with dishes that range from familiar to downright inventive.

Expect strawberry nachos, chocolate dipped strawberries, shortcake and a lineup of berry infused drinks, along with artisan vendors and live music. The festival's Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest draws a crowd every year. Originally based in Oxnard, the event now takes place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, giving visitors an oceanfront backdrop for its 40th anniversary celebration on May 16 and 17.

Experience the Return of the Gilroy Garlic Festival

Few food festivals carry the legacy of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. After several years off the calendar, the event is back in 2026 with a new home next to Gilroy Gardens.

The main draw is Gourmet Alley, where the festival's famous Pyro Chefs cook garlic scampi and calamari over open flames in full view of the crowd. Garlic fries, garlic bread and roasted garlic round out the menu, along with the festival's most talked about item: garlic ice cream, a dessert that's sweeter than it sounds. Cooking demonstrations, local artisans and live entertainment fill out the rest of the weekend.

When: July 24 to 26, 2026

Go Beyond the Spear at the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival

Every spring, Stockton celebrates one of the California Delta's most underrated crops. The San Joaquin Asparagus Festival takes asparagus far past the dinner plate, with vendors serving deep fried spears, asparagus corn dogs, asparagus burritos and even asparagus ice cream.

Beyond the food, the festival brings carnival rides, live music, agricultural exhibits and plenty of activities for kids. It's a celebration built around a vegetable most people never think to celebrate, and that's exactly the point. This year's event ran April 24 through 26.

Slurp Up Tradition at the Pismo Beach Clam Festival

On California's Central Coast, the self-proclaimed "Clam Capital of the World" has been throwing a party for its namesake mollusk since 1946. The Pismo Beach Clam Festival is a free, family-friendly celebration that draws tens of thousands of visitors to the oceanfront each October for a weekend built around clams and coastal charm.

The centerpiece is the Best Local Clam Chowder Cook-off, a ticketed event where Pismo Beach restaurants compete for bragging rights and attendees vote for the People's Choice winner. Beyond the chowder, the weekend kicks off with a Saturday morning parade and rolls on with live music, food vendors, local artisan booths, carnival rides and a free Kids Zone packed with bounce houses. Set against the Pacific and the town's historic pier, it's one of the more scenic single-food festivals in the state.
