January 13, 2020
Awards season is in full swing, and one of the most highly anticipated awards shows is less than a month away: The 2020 Academy Awards. Taking place on Sunday, February 9, at Hollywood’s iconic Dolby Theatre, the Oscars ceremony draws the attention of the entertainment industry and film fans from around the world. The buzz builds to a fevered pitch leading up to the Oscars telecast, when hundreds of millions of movie lovers tune in to see the red-carpet fashion, watch the glamorous ceremony, and learn who will receive the highest honors in filmmaking.
This year’s Academy Awards nominees were announced earlier today by actors Issa Rae and John Cho—and it seems Joker may get the last laugh. The comic-book blockbuster leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Directing for Todd Phillips, and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Joaquin Phoenix. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917, and The Irishman are close behind, with 10 nominations each.

The Irishman wasn’t the only Netflix original to nab several Oscar nominations. The streaming entertainment service also nabbed three nominations for The Two Popes starring Anthony Hopkins and six nominations for the poignant Marriage Story featuring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
Per usual, the Oscar nominations annoucement came with some snubs and controversy. When naming the 2020 nominees for Best Directing, Rae slyly made a point to say that all of the nominees were men again—“Congratulations to those men,” she said—as Little Women director Greta Gerwig was notably overlooked despite six other nominations for the film. Many critics were also surprised that neither Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Hustlers nor Jordan Peele’s Us was recognized. Frozen 2 was also noticeably absent from the Animated Feature category, but Disney is still represented with Toy Story 4.
See which of your favorite movies and actors received Oscar nominations—and who they’re up against—in the full list of the 92nd Academy Award nominees below. And make sure to tune in to the February 9 awards show, airing on ABC at 5 p.m.
