Nearly 20 galleries and shops in San Jose's SoFA District open their doors the same night. Smaller and calmer than Oakland's version, so it's easier to actually talk to an artist. Gallery hours vary by venue, so check ahead.
Location: The Castro, San Francisco
Date: Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 8 p.m.
Local artists display work inside participating businesses including MAG Galleries, Welcome Castro, The Artists' Gallery. A good excuse to duck into shops you'd otherwise walk past, and a low-key option if you don't want a full night out.
Location: Larkin Street between Eddy and O'Farrell, San Francisco
Date: Saturday, Aug. 8, noon to 5 p.m.
Live on Larkin is a free street party running the second Saturday through December, with live music, performances, food vendors and a kids' area. A chance to see the Tenderloin the way locals are rebuilding it, not through the last headline you read.
Location: Meets near an East Bay BART station (confirmed closer to the date)
Date: Friday, Aug. 14 (second Friday), meet at 7:30 p.m., ride rolls at 8 p.m.
The East Bay Bike Party is a costumed, music-blasting group ride with a different theme each month. Exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. Meetup location and route post about 24 hours before, so check their Facebook page that week.
Location: California Academy of Sciences, 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park
Date: Most Thursdays in August, 6 to 10 p.m.
NightLife is a 21-and-over evening with DJs and full access to the aquarium, rainforest dome and planetarium after dark, minus the field trip crowd. A new theme every week.
