Your August 2026 Bay Area Event Guide

Half the Bay Area seems to think a good weekend requires a reservation, a drive over a bridge, or both. It doesn't. There's a whole calendar of free, recurring stuff running underneath the flashy stuff, the same events happening month after month without ever making a "top 10" list. August is a good excuse to actually use it. 

Dig Through the Antiques Faire 

Location: Former Naval Air Station runways, 3900 Main St., Alameda  

Date: Sunday, Aug. 2, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The largest antiques show in Northern California, held the first Sunday of every month. Over 800 dealers set up on the old runways with the bay and skyline as backdrop. Kids under 12 get in free with an adult; the onsite box office is cash only, though tickets are available online. Don't confuse it with the "Alameda Swap Meet," a different market entirely. 

See Oakland's Museum for Free 

Location: Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak St., Oakland  

Date: Sunday, Aug. 2, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

OMCA drops general admission the first Sunday of every month. The Gallery of California Art holds Dorothea Lange's personal photo archive and paintings by Richard Diebenkorn, plus a koi pond that former field-trip kids still ask about. Reserve free tickets online to skip the wait. Easy to pair with the antiques faire that morning. 

Catch Free Art at the De Young or Legion 

Location: De Young, Golden Gate Park; Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, San Francisco  

Date: Every Saturday for Bay Area residents; Tuesday, Aug. 4, for everyone 

Both museums waive general admission for Bay Area residents every Saturday and for everyone on the first Tuesday. Covers the permanent collection only; bring a driver's license or piece of mail with your address. 

Head Downtown for the Street Party 

Location: Second Street between Market and Howard, San Francisco  

Date: Thursday, Aug. 6, 5 to 10 p.m. 

Downtown First Thursdays turns a stretch of financial district sidewalk into something that actually feels alive after office hours, with DJs, live music and food trucks. August's guest performer is Eric Rhodes, free all-ages DJ set from 7:30 to 9 p.m. A decent way to see downtown looking the way it's supposed to. 

Walk Telegraph Avenue on First Friday 

Location: Telegraph Avenue, West Grand to 27th Street, Oakland  

Date: Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 9:30 p.m. 

Oakland First Fridays has grown from a gallery crawl into a full street festival with local art, live music and small businesses lining Telegraph. August's theme is Oakland Rides & Town Vibes, celebrating the city's classic car community alongside a Youth Fest back-to-school component. Early evening skews family-friendly; it picks up nightlife energy as the sun goes down. 

Check Out San Jose's Gallery Scene 

Location: SoFA District, South First Street, San Jose  

Date: Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 9 p.m. 

Nearly 20 galleries and shops in San Jose's SoFA District open their doors the same night. Smaller and calmer than Oakland's version, so it's easier to actually talk to an artist. Gallery hours vary by venue, so check ahead. 

Browse the Castro's Storefront Art 

Location: The Castro, San Francisco  

Date: Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 8 p.m. 

Local artists display work inside participating businesses including MAG Galleries, Welcome Castro, The Artists' Gallery. A good excuse to duck into shops you'd otherwise walk past, and a low-key option if you don't want a full night out. 

Spend Saturday Afternoon on Larkin Street 

Location: Larkin Street between Eddy and O'Farrell, San Francisco  

Date: Saturday, Aug. 8, noon to 5 p.m. 

Live on Larkin is a free street party running the second Saturday through December, with live music, performances, food vendors and a kids' area. A chance to see the Tenderloin the way locals are rebuilding it, not through the last headline you read. 

Join the Monthly Bike Ride 

Location: Meets near an East Bay BART station (confirmed closer to the date) 

Date: Friday, Aug. 14 (second Friday), meet at 7:30 p.m., ride rolls at 8 p.m. 

The East Bay Bike Party is a costumed, music-blasting group ride with a different theme each month. Exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. Meetup location and route post about 24 hours before, so check their Facebook page that week. 

Visit the Academy of Sciences After Dark 

Location: California Academy of Sciences, 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park  

Date: Most Thursdays in August, 6 to 10 p.m. 

NightLife is a 21-and-over evening with DJs and full access to the aquarium, rainforest dome and planetarium after dark, minus the field trip crowd. A new theme every week.
