See full bioAs communities across the world and in California mitigate health risks during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are shifting our content focus and will not encourage any travel or social activities during this time. We will, however, continue to shine a light on and celebrate the many beautiful aspects of our State with the intention of being a source of inspiration and joy during this difficult period. We will also be providing tips and resources specifically related to the COVID-19 pandemic safety measures in the coming weeks. Thank you for reading, and stay safe!
Bored during lockdown? While you can spend endless hours watching California-made TV shows and movies on Netflix, sometimes you need a different type of entertainment, and luckily, many Golden State companies are offering discounted—and free—online classes right now. Here’s a list of California brands offering virtual classes that can keep your mind occupied when you’ve run out of things to do.
San Francisco–based media company Brit + Co provides online classes specifically for creative souls, and until April 9, all courses are free when you use the discount code “SELFCARE” at checkout. There are classes that teach photo-editing techniques (to keep your Insta feed looking fresh), show how to decorate a cake, and provide tips for investing your money, among many other skills. So, go stock up on some fresh ideas. You’ll be able to keep yourself occupied while also flexing your brain muscles.
If you’ve been considering reading a book but been putting it off for weeks, now is the perfect time to dive in. San Francisco’s Scribd, an ebook and audiobook subscription service, is offering its entire library for free for 30 days. Not only are there books, but also magazines, newspapers, sheet music, and more. Sign up for access to everything available to stay informed and prevent boredom when you’re sheltering in place. (Bonus points for choosing a book by one of California’s famous female authors.)
Situated in sunny Santa Monica, fitness brand Beachbody is offering a free 14-day trial of its on-demand workouts, so you can get toned in the comfort of your own home. Workout routines for kids are also available, so you can keep the little ones busy and active while they’re stuck at home, too. (Want more virtual workouts? Check out our article featuring the best exercise classes to do at home.)
Mystery Science is dedicated to fun and simple science experiments to do at home. Founded in San Francisco, the company is currently providing free lesson plans for parents with kids in grades K–5. There are numerous hands-on options, including mini-lessons and full-lessons that pose questions like: Why do we get hiccups? or What will the weather be like on your birthday? Whether your children love animals, nature, or space, there’s something for them to enjoy.
If none of these offerings are your jam, then I suggest listening to music, re-organizing your closet, or trying a new recipe. Try to do something to stimulate your mind and keep yourself busy during these crazy, unprecedented times. Remember: We’re all in this together!
