Banning resides in Riverside County in the San Gorgonio Pass between San Bernardino National Forest and San Gorgonio Mountain. Its strategic location between Los Angeles and Palm Springs made it an ideal stagecoach stop in the late 1880sーa tradition that is still celebrated today with Stagecoach Days, marked by a parade, rodeo, and carnivalー as well as a railroad stop later on between Arizona and LA. While the city was incorporated in 1913, the region has a much older history as indicated by the uncovering of fossilized remains of a mastodon from the Pliocene Age.
