Once upon a time, Pico Pico—the last Mexican governor of Alta, California—constructed the most luxurious hotel in the area. In 1870, Pico was inaugurated in his hotel, the Pico House Hotel. A year later, a group of Chinese men were murdered on the hotel's premises.

As the city bloomed in the 1900s, the hotel started losing its popularity and eventually became a California Historic Landmark. Today visitors can take a tour of what once was the most extravagant hotel in Southern California. Visitors and employees swear that late at night they can hear footsteps coming from the top floor of the empty three-story building.
